Self-Penned Lead Single “Never Giving Up” Available Now

Nashville, TN – October 30, 2013 – Melinda Doolittle, the American Idol season six finalist that the New York Times hails as “phenomenally gifted,” makes a strong return with her much anticipated EP You’re The Reason to be released November 12. You’re The Reason, the followup to her critically-acclaimed 2009 debut Coming Back To You, features the powerhouse singer with a sound like never before.

For the first time, the soulful R&B/pop singer who the New York Times named one of the top three most talented American Idol contestants EVER, contributes four self-penned songs to her own album.

You’re The Reason features the acclaimed and eclectic songwriting contributions of Tre’ Corley, Michael Ricks, Randy Davis, Connie Rae Harrington, Sonya Isaacs and Jimmy Yeary.

The recently released lead single “Never Giving Up,” written by Doolittle, Tre’ Corley and Jonathan Lee, is available now on iTunes. Melinda co-produced the track with Corley. “Never Giving Up” is extremely personal to Doolittle. After facing one of her most difficult obstacles during and after her time on American Idol, she was able to pour herself in to writing the song. “There were always really amazing things said about my singing [on American Idol], but when people had anything bad to say it was about my looks and sometimes my personality.” She added, “These words hurt more than anything they could have ever said about my voice. They stuck with me, and I believed those words far too long. Even while singing at The White House, Carnegie Hall, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and so many more amazing places, I still saw myself as less than.”

“‘Never Giving Up’ focuses on love, but really it’s about life. It’s about knowing myself and what I’m capable of, and not letting anything…the words people say, how hard the journey is, how delayed the winning seems…makes me stop the fight. I’m so much stronger than people give me credit for and I refuse to give up on ANYTHING.”

You’re The Reason Track Listing:

  • “Never Giving Up”
  • “Without You”
  • “You’re The Reason (U.R.Y.)”

  • “I Believe In Love”
  • “You’re The Reason (U.R.Y.)” / extended version featuring W.I.T.!

Born in St. Louis, MO but claiming Franklin, TN home, Doolittle worked as a professional background singer for music greats Aretha Franklin, Michael McDonald, Kirk Franklin, Aaron Neville, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Alabama, Johnny Lang, Carman and the gospel group Anointed before auditioning and eventually placing third on season six of the highly-rated American Idol.

Since her time on American Idol, the Belmont University music major graduate (Nashville, TN) has performed at The White House, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just to name a few. She has shared the stage with such musical luminaries as Peter Cetera, Cyndi Lauper, and the Boston Pops Orchestra. In 2010, Melinda wrote a book, Beyond Me, giving her unique and positive perspectives on life and recounting the important life lessons that have helped shape who she is.

In 2011, Melinda blazed a new trail as the first African American character (Cassie Cassava) on the tremendously popular children’s cartoon – Veggie Tales on their DVD release, ‘Twas The Night Before Easter. Also in 2011, she released an original Christmas single “God Bless Us Everyone” that she co-wrote with renowned songwriter Regie Hamm.

The soulful R&B/pop singer/songwriter is THE featured singer on the recently released (2013) A Boston Pops Christmas – Live From Symphony Hall available now at iTunes. Doolittle performs two songs on the album – “Three Christmas Spirituals” and “Children Go Where I Send Thee.”

Melinda’s love for music is eclipsed only by her love of giving back, as she dedicates much of her time to working with numerous charities, especially those that center on improving the lives of children; including the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and The League, which promotes involvement in community service among children.  She also works extensively with Malaria No More, and has traveled to Africa twice, once as a presidential delegate and once with former First Lady Laura Bush, bringing awareness to the preventable disease that takes the lives of over one million children under the age of five, every year.
